The Power of #Hashtags: 50 Popular Tags To Use in Social Media

You have seen them everywhere.

For decades we called this symbol (#) the number or pound sign, but the new social media generation calls it the #Hashtag. The hashtag is a descriptive label used for identification and discovery. Using the # symbol before a word makes it easier for content to be found or searched.

The most common platforms where you’ll find these hashtags are Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Facebook, Pinterest, and Tumblr. Many websites, news sites, tv channels use them to create a trend or to make their content searchable.

When did the first hashtag appeared in social media?

Chris Messina, a social technology expert, is credited to have used the very first hashtag on Twitter. He was inspired by the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks in which hashtags were used to label different topics. Then, on August 23rd, 2007 he posted this on Twitter:

And that was the origin of #hashtags as we know it.

However, Twitter didn’t adopt them immediately. It was later that the community recognized their value and discovered different ways to use them. Its continuous use generated such a powerful trend, that, in 2010 Twitter featured them in their front page to tell their users the latest popular topics.

Nowadays, hashtags have become part of our everyday life. They are so commonly used that we can find them across every platform: social, written or visual. To filter through to the clutter and to make our life easier, we use them to keep track of whatever interests us.

But, do you know how to use them in the best possible way?

#Hashtag Etiquette: The Do’s and Don’ts of Hashtags

Using hashtags in one platform may not reflect the same effect than on other platforms. Consider your niche and your audience behavior before using a hashtag, you don’t want to use #FashionMonday if your business or blog is about gardening. Let’s see some tips to use hashtags correctly in social media:

#DontPutAThousandWordsTogether: Don’t make your hashtag difficult to read with too many words strung together.

#CapitalizeYourWords: Don’t forget to capitalize the first letter of each word to make your hashtag more readable.

#Don’t #Hashtag #Every #Word #In #Your #Tweets: This. Annoying, isn’t it? Try to use a hashtag related to your niche or the topic in question to make it searchable and easy to read.

#KeepItOnTopic: Just because a hashtag is popular or trending, it doesn’t mean that it suits your audience or even your topic. Create awareness by adding hashtag related to your niche. If you want to use a trending hashtag, be sure to know what it is trending about before jumping in the conversation.

#MakeSomeNoise: With literally millions of posts and tweets published every day, you can get to your message come across different platforms with ideas that will make you unique. Some suggestions: create your own discussion and host a chat, engage with your followers by posting polls, etc.

#BeAGrammarWitch: be sure to check the spelling of all your hashtags before posting you tweets or posts in other platforms. If there’s a letter missing, your hashtag may get lost in translation, never to see the light of day.

#AlignWithYourIndustry: search across social media to see what #keywords related to your industry are trending to add them to your post.

#HumorMe: Have some fun! Not everything has to be serious all the time, hashtags can be used to deliver a great punch line, but use them wisely and keep them simple.
